As we are a company mostly of artists, Global Arts/Media is pleased to announce a series of affordable, high quality artist residences in Cuba, which we hope will nurture individual creative development and facilitate cultural exchange, collaboration and friendship between US and Cuban artists. We are thrilled to launch this initiative in December 2018 with an amazing program featuring master printmaker Dan Welden.

Throughout 2019, Global Arts will offer residencies in many disciplines, including visual arts, dance, music, theater, literature, folk and traditional arts, media arts, architecture, design and creative placemaking. We very much appreciate the guidance, generosity and support of our fabulous network of Cuban artists and friends, without whom this new program would not be possible.

A limited number of applications will be accepted for each residency. So, we encourage you to sign up to receive regular emails concerning our arts and residency opportunities in Cuba.

And, if you are a professional US or international artist interested in conducting a residency in Cuba, please contact us. We’d like to hear from you!

El Taller de Grafica Experimental

Havana, Cuba

(Residency $650, plus $75 studio fee.)**

An international group of self-directed artists will have an 8-day stay in Havana, including a 5-day work session alongside Master Printmaker Dan Welden at El Taller Experimental de Grafica, one of Cuba’s oldest and most important graphic arts centers. Artists will have the opportunity to exhibit up to 3 selected works (on paper) in El Taller’s galleries.

Dan Welden will supervise the residency and, along with the US artists, will create alongside a selected number of Cuban printmakers. The combined energies of the Cuban and US artists are sure to produce many innovative and exciting works during this studio residency.

In addition to the residency, participants will have an opportunity to join a weeklong Cuba tour with visits to UNESCO World Heritage cities, including Havana, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Camaguey and Santiago, highlighted by visits to artist studios and spaces. For cost, information and itinerary, contact Global Arts/Media.

Master printmaker, painter, educator and author, Dan Welden has been making prints and works on paper for more than 50 years. His work has been shown in over 80 international solo exhibitions in museums and galleries and over 700 group exhibitions in the US, Europe, China, Japan, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand and Peru. He has collaborated with and/or printed for many prominent artists including Willem and Elaine deKooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, and Kurt Vonnegut.

One of the original ‘Pioneers of Alternative Printmaking,’ Dan is the developer of Solarplate a non-hazardous printing technique. It does not use grounds, acids or solvents. It is exposed with UV light (The Sun) and developed with ordinary tap water. Solarplate is becoming increasingly popular nationally and internationally, as an alternative to traditional etching and relief printing techniques. [Photo Credit: Rick Wenner]
