El Taller de Grafica Experimental
(Residency $650, plus $75 studio fee.)**
An international group of self-directed artists will have an 8-day stay in Havana, including a 5-day work session alongside Master Printmaker Dan Welden at El Taller Experimental de Grafica, one of Cuba’s oldest and most important graphic arts centers. Artists will have the opportunity to exhibit up to 3 selected works (on paper) in El Taller’s galleries.
Dan Welden will supervise the residency and, along with the US artists, will create alongside a selected number of Cuban printmakers. The combined energies of the Cuban and US artists are sure to produce many innovative and exciting works during this studio residency.
In addition to the residency, participants will have an opportunity to join a weeklong Cuba tour with visits to UNESCO World Heritage cities, including Havana, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Camaguey and Santiago, highlighted by visits to artist studios and spaces. For cost, information and itinerary, contact Global Arts/Media.
Master printmaker, painter, educator and author, Dan Welden has been making prints and works on paper for more than 50 years. His work has been shown in over 80 international solo exhibitions in museums and galleries and over 700 group exhibitions in the US, Europe, China, Japan, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand and Peru. He has collaborated with and/or printed for many prominent artists including Willem and Elaine deKooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Robert Motherwell, and Kurt Vonnegut.
One of the original ‘Pioneers of Alternative Printmaking,’ Dan is the developer of Solarplate a non-hazardous printing technique. It does not use grounds, acids or solvents. It is exposed with UV light (The Sun) and developed with ordinary tap water. Solarplate is becoming increasingly popular nationally and internationally, as an alternative to traditional etching and relief printing techniques. [Photo Credit: Rick Wenner]
